What is a Mainframe Computer?

Mainframe Computer is a type of computer that basically known for occupying large size, great storage capacity, processing power, and high level of consistency. Mainframe Computer can work being uninterrupted for a long time period. 

It describes three terms reliability, availability, serviceability which is a  key quality of mainframe computer. 

The Mainframe computer tastes like a super sharp machine that contains big memory, huge storage space, lots of high-speed processors, so it has Ultra compression power compared to standard computer systems. 

Hence, the value of a well-known computer system is increasing with great organization, scientific research, consumer statistics, and statistical data, because it is capable of performing many complex systems simultaneously at high speed. 

Nowadays, the most prominent sellers of mainframe computers are IBM, Hitachi, Amdahl, and Unisys.

Some Examples of Mainframe Computer are :

  • IBM Z Series like - z900, z990.
  • System Z9.
  • System Z10 Servers.
90 percent of the market share is dominated by IBM in mainframe computers.

Uses of Mainframes

  • Defence - Mainframe Computer is used in Defence System. (Military, Navy, and Airforce)

  • Health - Mainframe Computers used in Health Care Center or in Laboratories.

  • Mainframe Computers are used for Cloud Computing.

  • Mainframe computers are used mainly by great organizations for critical applications; huge amount of data processing, business statistics, census, and in securing online transactions.

  • Companies - Some popular companies which use mainframe computers are - Railways or other government organizations, ICICI or other Banks, Wallmart, and many web hosting servers. 

Advantages of Mainframe's

  • Mainframe computer helps in managing bulky jobs easily.

  • It can be used as web hosting hubs and as Cloud Computing for a large no. of users.

  • It's storage capacity and working powers are much higher than other computers but less than supercomputers.

  • Mainframes allow computers to process large amounts of data at once without detecting malicious attacks.

  • Mainframe computers are popular because of their durability, as they can last up to 50 years after proper installation. 

  • Mainframe's application settings achieve excellent performance due to their large memory.

  • Mainframe computer systems can assign their loads to many other processors and I/O terminals and this process increases their performance.

  • The mainframe system is capable of handling other complex systems such as Unix, VMS, and other IBM O / S applications such as Z / OS and Z / VM.

  • Mainframe applications are the smallest you can find for any errors and bugs during the transition. At some point, some errors trying to break into the system are capable of removing them.
