What Is an Input Device?


An Input Device is a hardware component or peripheral that helps the user to provide proper instructions to Computer System. Input devices act as an intermediary between the user and other computer components. Most of the input devices interact with or control the computer system in some instances. 

Generally used input devices are Keyboard and mouse but there are more examples of input devices of computer which performs many other important functions which made user works more easy and efficient. Some of them are listed below :

It contains Alphabets, Numeric values using the numeric keypad, Special Characters, and many other important Keys that perform some specific functions using Function keys. Hot keys and Keyboard shortcuts are used for performing repetitive tasks that save time and increase efficiency. Arrow keys help in navigating.

2. Mouse

A mouse is also an example of mostly used input devices. A mouse is used for selection and pointing purposes in a computer system. It falls in the categories of pointing devices as it is used as a pointer or cursor.

The mouse helps the users to navigate or point through any sections or icons in a computer system. It contains three buttons - Right Click, Left Click, and Scroll Wheel. USB mouse gets connected with the help of a USB port available on computers. 

After the advancement in technology, wireless mouse, optical mouse, and gaming mouse has been introduced. The optical mouse has optical sensors to operate it. The Wireless mouse is cordless. A Mouse pad is needed to operate optical as well as a wireless mouse or a supporting surface of table.
  • The right-Click button helps in selecting any section or icon.
  • Left Click is generally used for navigating through some specific page properties.
  • Scroll Wheel is used to scroll tabs and zooming purposes.

Joystick consists of a flat stand on which a pivot stick is present. That stick moves on a pivot on some angles which helps in navigating. A bob is situated at uppermost of the stick which helps in gripping the stick for use. It looks like a gear of vehicles.
